Abstract

an aromatic plant whose flowers had not been seen, which was cultivated around Bayt al Faqih in present-day Yemen. No type specimen has been found. The name has almost never been used in works other than those discussing Forsskal's work (Christensen in Dansk Bot. Ark. 4, 3: 21. 1922; Wood in Kew Bull. 37: 602. 1983; Hepper & Friis, The plants of Pehr Forsskal's Flora Aegyptico-Arabica 169. 1994). The one exception to this, Schwartz (in Mitt. Inst. Allg. Bot. Hamburg 10: 232. 1939), listed the species as accepted but failed to cite any specimen, only referring to Forsskal's original publication and collection. There are three other occurrences of the epithet vaalae in the literature. Deflers, Revue d'Egypt: 423 (47 in separate reprint) (1894), created the new combination vaalae (Forssk.) Deflers, referring to Forsskal's original publication. This combination has not been included in Index Kewensis or IPNI, nor in the works discussing 0. vaalae. Chiovenda (in Nuovo Giour. Bot. Ital. 26: 163, 1919) states that vaalae is conspecific to a species that he called Coleus Rondinella
