Abstract

Red mud (RM) is a hazardous waste material produced during the alkaline leaching of bauxite in the Bayer process. Its high alkalinity combined with large production rates poses serious environmental problems. In recent years, researchers have explored the potential use of RM as a cementitious binder in concrete mixes. This chapter intends to highlight the existing knowledge about RM utilization and its influence on the holistic performance of concrete. First, the general properties of RM including physical, chemical and its characterization are discussed. Then, a critical review of recent research studies about the influence of RM on concrete performance is conducted. In particular, the influence of RM on properties of concrete including fresh and mechanical properties, microstructure, durability, etc. are revealed. Besides, the field application of RM-concrete as well as their economic and environmental impacts are discussed. The information revealed in this paper not only would provide a comprehensive understanding of using RM in concrete but also provide valuable ideas and guidance for similar studies in the future.
