Abstract

Limestone powder is used as one of the fillers in concrete due to its wide availability and low cost. Apart from reducing carbon dioxide emissions, use of limestone powder has also resulted in the decrease of heat of hydration and improvement in the workability of concrete. This chapter reviews the effect of limestone powder on the workability, mechanical properties and durability of concrete in detail. The physical and chemical properties of limestone powder used in concrete have been studied. The mechanical properties included the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength and modulus of elasticity of concrete. The durability properties included the water absorption, water penetration, rapid chloride permeability, acid resistance, sorptivity, carbonation resistance, drying shrinkage, and sulfate resistance of concrete. Incorporation of limestone in combination with other supplementary cementitious materials can be successfully incorporated in concrete to attain sustainability.
