Abstract

This chapter deals with the potential for marketing recycled aggregates arising from construction and demolition waste, as well as considering the current state of technology, legislation and practice. It presents some of the influencing variables in the wider recognition of recycled aggregates in construction from an environmental point of view. The economic viability is discussed in three stages throughout the life cycle of recycled aggregates, including taxation on natural resources, implementation of deconstruction/selective demolition methods and activities practised by recycling plants. The importance of certification of recycled aggregates to improve the confidence of stakeholders in the material is also discussed. The implementation of comprehensive certification schemes and increased intervention of the regional authorities through stricter legislation have been considered as key factors, capable of inducing greater engagement by construction and demolition companies.
