Abstract

This chapter provides an overview on the plumbing and fire protection systems. Plumbing and fire protection systems are normally not considered within the purview of heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, and refrigerating (HVAC&R) designer's expertise. Nevertheless, both subsets of designers, in practice, must work collaboratively in putting together a functional building mechanical system. This chapter discusses the key aspects of plumbing design that can have an impact on green design—including several significant ASHRAE GreenTips. It is important in green building design for the practitioners of each design discipline to be familiar with what the other disciplines may bring to an effective green design. There are limited opportunities to integrate the components or subsystems of the fire protection systems as a green strategy on a project. It is imperative that all code issues be fully understood when considering this strategy.
