Abstract

Nutrient-rich wastewater from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) is one of the largest sources of surface water contamination. This study evaluated biochar as a media in containerized constructed treatment wetlands for CAFO wastewater treatment in greenhouse test over 12months. ANOVA and Tukey's honestly significant difference (Tukey's HSD) test were used for statistical analysis. The incorporation of wood biochar into the CTW media significantly improved treatment of the CAFO wastewater. Also, plant growth was greatest in the biochar CTWs than the control with only sand and gravel. Additional studies using other types of biochar could yield even better results.
