Abstract

Alcohol in religious and cultural food covers alcoholic beverages such as wine and liquor, as well as any food items that contain ethanol. Islam strictly forbids the uses of any mind-altering substances, whether in the form of food, drink, or smoking. Muslims believe that maintaining health requires mastering full control over one's mind, body, and spirit at all times. Since misuse of alcohol leads to toxicity that causes disruption to daily activity and physical and mental well-being, Islam has strictly prohibited the consumption, production, and selling of alcohol. On the other hand, the term wine appears in the Bible, but the drunkenness due to intoxicating fermented wine is condemned. In contrast, controlled alcoholic consumption is observed by the Jewish faith. Interestingly, history had shown that Hindus abstain from alcohol, although some evidence showed otherwise. Lastly, Buddhism encourages avoidance of alcohol. This chapter is a comprehensive presentation on the position of alcohol in religious and cultural food as well as alcohol addiction worldwide.
