Abstract

ABSTRACTSlabs play a vital role in enhancing structural capacity to resist progressive collapse. However, there are only some qualitative suggestions rather than quantitative provisions in the current codes and design guides concerning the beneficial effect of slabs to mitigate under progressive collapse. Therefore, a mechanical model for calculating load‐carrying capacities of floor systems against progressive collapse is timely and necessary. In this paper, a new mechanical model is proposed to quantify load‐carrying capacities of 3D composite floor systems for internal column removal scenarios. The assumptions, simplifications and failure criteria of the model, which are based on the results of validated numerical analyses and other researchers’ tests, are introduced first. After that, the derivations of the proposed model are discussed. Then, the static load‐displacement responses obtained from this model are compared with the test results. Good agreement is obtained between the model and the test results.
