Abstract

The authors developed two novel control schemes for STATCOM (STATic synchronous COMpensator) to improve transient stability. First scheme is “Coordination Control” which coordinates the AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) control and the PSS (Power System Stabilizer) control depending on the status of the power system to maximize the effect of transient stability improvement. Second scheme is “Double Bundle control” which operates parallel STATCOMs as one lump STATCOM equivalently and realizes lower harmonics and high-speed current control. We performed verification test using real-time power system simulator in order to confirm the effect of the control schemes. We proved that these novel schemes improve transient stability under various severe faults.
