Abstract

After completing the two parts of the book with mathematical prerequisites, in this chapter we begin our journey into the special theory of relativity. We first study the central concept of the special theory of relativity—the principle of relativity. Next, we discuss an important consequence of the principle of relativity, which is the principle of invariance of the speed of light in vacuum. Thereafter, we introduce the concept of events and the interval between the two events in the special theory of relativity. Thereby, we define the metric of the pseudo-Euclidean space-time of special relativity. Finally, we derive the Lorentz transformations and study the velocity and acceleration of particles in the relativistic kinematics.
