Abstract

It has been an exciting decade of transgenic nonhuman primate (NHP) modeling, with the first transgenic monkey model of Huntington’s disease (HD) reported in 2008 and subsequent reports on successful creation of new transgenic NHPs from different countries and institutions. The increased interest in developing transgenic NHPs suggests the rising role of NHPs in modeling human diseases, especially for preclinical research. The success in recapitulating key clinical features of HD in transgenic Huntington’s monkeys and the application of similar clinical measurements used in human patients further support the importance of this unique model system for the development of novel diagnostics, biomarkers, and determining therapeutic efficacy of new treatments. This chapter updates the methodology for creating transgenic NHPs and the current trend toward modeling human diseases using higher primates.
