Abstract

Surface modification is the process of transforming surfaces of materials by changing their physical, chemical, or biological features differently from the original characteristics found on their surfaces, while functionalization is the act of introducing different chemical functional groups to material surfaces. Ceramic composites are used as effective constituents for hardening materials to tolerate unfavorable conditions such as high temperature, stress, and corrosion in various engineering processes and applications. Ceramic composites require improvement in their properties through surface functionalization and modification for optimum performance in different fields of science and engineering. The surface characteristics of ceramic composites are key factor in determining the success of any of their based material’s affinity, interaction, and binding properties with other molecules. Electrical discharge coating technique approach to modifying ceramic composites was evaluated, and its design strategies for enhancing the properties of various ceramic composites. In our study, we present an overview of the current techniques of using electrical discharge coating technique approaches for surface modification and functionalization of ceramic composites.
