Abstract

This chapter focuses on the clinical presentation and treatment of learning disabled children. Physicians and health professionals, psychologists, and educators have been enlisted to identify and aid the learning disabled children. Psychotherapy is a useful and necessary component of the treatment program. It must be tailored to the needs of the individual and his or her family, because the emotional situation of a child who academically underachieves affects every family member. The assessment of the adolescent who may be learning disabled falls to the physician or to the health professional with increasing frequency, particularly in its initial stages. Therefore, awareness of a basic approach to screening such patients is a necessity. Based on indications from proper screening, additional referrals can be made to other essential members of the evaluation and treatment team. Facilitating such evaluation and follow-up is an appropriate function for the health care provider.
