Abstract

Gas lift technology increases oil production rate by injecting compressed gas into the lower section of tubing through the casing–tubing annulus and an orifice installed in the tubing string. Upon entering the tubing, the compressed gas affects liquid flow in two ways: the energy of expansion propels the oil to the surface and the gas aerates the oil so that the effective density of the fluid is less and thus easier to get to the surface. This chapter presents the principles of gas lift systems and illustrates a procedure for designing gas lift operations. Major tasks include calculations of well deliverability, pressure and horsepower requirements for gas lift gas compression, gas lift valve selection and spacing, and selection of installation methods.
