Abstract
Phytosanitary treatments, also commonly referred to as quarantine treatments, are necessary to prevent the spread of invasive agricultural pests through the global trade of fresh horticultural commodities. Irradiation treatments, including eBeam processing, have shown considerable promise in successfully treating fruits for import and have been growing in use. This chapter discusses the need for phytosanitary treatments, the benefits and challenges of irradiation as a treatment, current global use of irradiation, applicable regulations, and a brief overview of the requirements needed to begin phytosanitary treatment of fruits using eBeam processing.
