Abstract

The expanding potential of stem cell technologies is promising to revolutionize the field of regenerative medicine. Otology is no exception, and ongoing research from laboratories around the globe is aiming to deliver a stem cell-based therapy for hearing impairment. For this to happen, is important to identify a suitable candidate cell with the potential to differentiate into the required cell lineages. In this chapter, we review the work carried out so far to characterize cells with auditory potential from different tissues and sources. We discuss their suitability, based on developmental information, and comment about the barriers that we may need to overcome to make a therapy a reality.
