Abstract
Nanotechnology has received great interest in the cosmetic field. Nanotechnology is applied in cosmetic formulations, manufacturing, and packaging. Many nanoparticles have been incorporated in cosmetic formulations. They have characteristics of large surface area, large number of particles per unit weight, transparent or translucent appearance, good solubility, and good skin-penetration properties. Many of them also exhibit excellent UV shielding, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. They are used as UV filters, free-radical scavengers, active ingredients, skin moisturizers, and carriers in various cosmetic formulations. They can significantly improve the solubility of poorly soluble compounds, skin penetration, stability, and controlled release of active compounds. This chapter presents different types of nanoparticles and their applications in cosmetics.
