Abstract

Training in child neurology requires formal training in other aspects of pediatrics. This pediatrics training affords the ability to obtain a developmentally appropriate history and physical examination at all stages of childhood and adolescence and to provide anticipatory guidance to children and families of all developmental ages; the ability to identify and respond appropriately to emergent, urgent, and/or life-critical need for medical and/or psychosocial intervention on behalf of children and/or their families; the ability to identify and provide for appropriate medical and psychosocial services and supports for children and families affected by chronic and/or fatal diseases; and the ability to identify and respond appropriately to nonneurologic manifestations of risk factors for or harbingers of neurologic diseases or conditions. In this context, it also allows the trainee to hone skills in communication, counseling, teaching, and critical thinking, all of which are important for the effective practice of child neurology.
