Abstract

A hybrid oscillator operating at 12 GHz was designed and demonstrated at cryogenic temperature. The active device in this low-phase-noise oscillator was an AlGaAs/GaAs heterojunction bipolar transistor, and a double-sided microstrip YBa2Cu3Ox (YBCO) resonator with an unloaded Q-factor greater than 20,000 was used as the stabilizing element. At an offset frequency of 10 KHz, this hybrid oscillator had a single-sided phase noise of only −100 dBc/Hz. This value was 30 dB better than that of the free running oscillation. This result indicate that the YBCO resonator is effective for improving the phase noise in the microwave oscillator.
