Abstract
Acute appendicitis remains the most common abdominal cause of emergency surgery. This chapter reviews the epidemiology, pathology, and pathophysiology of acute appendicitis. The clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, and role of imaging in diagnosis are discussed. The treatment options for acute appendicitis, including an evolving literature on nonoperative management of appendicitis, are reviewed. The role of surgery and the surgical options for the treatment of appendicitis are explored. Special topics related to the appendix, including the role of the appendix in the pathophysiology of IBD, appendiceal tumors, diverticula, and chronic appendicitis are also covered.
