Abstract

Clinicians who understand child development and behavior from a family systems perspective enhance care and treatment outcomes. Children grow in and with their families; their development is inextricably intertwined with the lives of their family members. This chapter offers an overview of family systems theory, including the family life cycle, and discusses the role of family in children’s development. Family systems concepts are applied to milestones across the life cycle of families of children with developmental and behavioral disabilities. Multiple case vignettes are used throughout the chapter to demonstrate the diversity of families with developmental disabilities over time.
