Abstract
This chapter describes terpene resins and their monomers, properties, and applications. The discovery of terpene resins is briefly summarized here. Terpenes and related monomers are relatively nontoxic liquids that may be obtained from natural renewable nonpetroleum sources. Various naturally occurring terpene compounds are listed. The curing process contains homopolymers, copolymers, terpene phenolic resins, poly(farnesene)s, etc. Terpene resins have an excellent solubility in elastomers and so are useful as adhesives known as tackifiers. Polyterpene resins are used as pressure-sensitive adhesives and sealants and are used in chewing gum. Special formulations like toughener for novolacs and fluoro-copolymers are obtained. Some terpenes are pure hydrocarbons and provide plants and flowers with fragrance.
