Abstract

This chapter presents the automation project planning and its implementation in meeting business goals. While translating business goals to system strategy, one should start with an analysis. The analysis should include the present situation and the challenges that one needs to meet. The result of such analysis brings out the requirement. These requirements are part of an automation plan. The system strategy must also have an implementation plan. The chapter explains what to look for in batch software packages. Every batch plant has certain basic capabilities that are common to all batch plants. For selecting the most appropriate automation solution, it is critical to identify and understand the dominant traits of the batch process. These include the process equipment, equipment control systems, and operators who interact with the process, product recipes, a production schedule, and a historical data record. The chapter also describes the key features of some software packages that are available in the market.
