Abstract

12-month prevalence of selected diseases in physicians in Germany. Results of a cross-sectional study Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the health status of physicians in Germany based on the 12-month prevalence of selected diseases, the BMI and their health behaviour. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted as an online survey using questions from the GEDA study. The 12-month prevalence of the selected diseases and the percentage proportion by BMI category and associated 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated. Results: A total of 343 physicians (73.18% women, 25.36% men, 1.46% non-binary) with a mean age of 37.77 (SD 8.42) years were included in this study. Based on BMI, 21.90% (95% CI: 16.86%; 27.65%) of female and 13.75% (7.07%; 23.27%) of male participants were found to be overweight. The highest 12-month prevalence was found for neck complaints (46.94% [95% CI: 41.58%; 52.37%]), back complaints (43.73% [95% CI: 38.41%; 49.16%] and allergies (34.69 [95% CI: 29.66%; 39.99%]). It should be noted here that the 12-month prevalence of depression among female participants was 13.55% (95% CI: 9.57%; 18.41%). 26.69% (95% CI: 21.96%; 31.84%) of participants exercised for ≥10 min never or less frequently than one day per week. In addition, 46.63% (95% CI: 41.11%; 52.20%) consulted a general practitioner/family doctor in the last 12 months. Conclusion: Overall, the participating physicians indicated a good health status, although the 12-month prevalence of depression in female participants could be considered high.
