Abstract

Joule heating fabrics are a class of e-textiles that supply controlled thermal energy when a voltage is applied. Since their discovery, there have been innumerable challenges starting from the right choice of fabrics, the suitable fabrication method for the heating element that could supply a uniform temperature distribution, and finally, the control of the device that can deliver durable performance for real-life applications. Further, the performance of fabric-based joule heaters have been improved, and even sophisticated technology for on-body heating applications has evolved over time. This chapter overviews the important prerequisites for wearable fabric heaters, major protocols adopted for their fabrication, and their application in various fields.
