Abstract

Perception and evaluation of one's physical appearance, or body image, is a psychological construct that is closely related to self-image as a whole, personality, and psychological well-being. Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is an intensification of normal concerns about physical appearance. Diagnosable BDD takes many forms. Persons with BDD fequently present with or have social phobia, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or eating disorders This chapter discusses the effectiveness of various psychological therapies as applied to the problem of BDD. The chapter presents an outline of BDD assessment and treatment that follows procedures similar to the cognitive behavioral treatment of phobias and obsessive compulsive disorder. Various clinical features of BDD are discussed, which includeseveral types of appearance complaints, cognitive and affective features, and behavioral features. The psychotherapy research on BDD including case studies of both non-behavioral and behavioral psychotherapies are also discussed.
