Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 12-week combined exercise program including aerobic and resistance exercise on body composition blood pressure, pulse wave velocity, blood nitric oxide(NO) and lipids in middle-aged women with pre-hypertension. The subjects were middle aged women between 50-64 years old with pre-hypertension(systolic blood pressure 120-139mmHg, diastolic blood pressure 80-89mmHG) and the number of subjects were 27; Combined exercise group(n=9), aerobic exercise group(n=8), control group(n=10). Combined exercise includes aerobic walking exercise and resistance exercise with elastic-band. Aerobic exercise program consist of aerobic walking exercise and both exercise were performed 60 minutes for each session, 3 times a week for 12 weeks. Body composition, blood pressure and pulse wave velocity were measured before and after, blood sample was taken before and after as well to analyze blood NO and lipids. The results of the study are in eth following. First, combined exercise showed effectiveness on decrease of body fat percentage and wrist to hip ratio(WHR) and increase of lean mass . Second, combined exercise was effective on decrease of systolic and diastolic blood pressure and improving pulse wave velocity. Third, combined exercise was effective on increase of blood NO and improving blood lipids. Based on the results, combined exercise was suitable for pre-hypertension middle-aged women’s health promotion because it improves blood pressure, pulse velocity, blood NO and lipids, in addition, it helps body composition like decrease of body fat and increase of amount of muscle before arriving at senescence when the amount of muscle reduces.
