Abstract

Urodynamic studies (UDS) use a set of measurements to assess the function and dysfunction of the lower urinary tract. Conditions that affect the lower urinary tract may cause lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). These symptoms can have a significant negative effect on quality of life. Additionally, lower urinary tract dysfunction can be “silent” but place a person at risk for upper urinary tract complications. UDS have been used successfully in both scenarios. UDS can be used to assess the two basic functions of the lower urinary tract: bladder filling and bladder emptying. Clinicians and researchers should aim to obtain quality measures and utilize standardized terminology when electing to use UDS. The test used should be selected and executed with the goal of answering a specific question(s).
