Abstract
For infants and children, currently available mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices can provide short-term support for reversible myocardial failure, cardiopulmonary support before and after cardiac surgery, and long-term support as a potential bridge to cardiac transplantation. MCS devices commonly available include extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) counter pulsation, and ventricular assist devices (VADs).
