Abstract

A Japanese domestic cat being FeLV-possitive and suffering from depression, anorexia, and vomiting showed severe pancytopenia. Examination of bone-marrow and cytochemical staining led to a diagnosis of acute myeloblastic leukemia with maturation (M2). Combination chemotherapy using vincristine, daunorubicin, cytosine arabinoside, and prednisolone resulted in a complete remission. Thereafter the cat had been kept in a good condition by a low dose administration of cytosine arabinoside. On the 346th day, however, anemia, thrombocytopenia, and leukocytosis of the blast cells appeared. Because the blast cells were negative for both peroxidase and nonspecific esterase, and flow-cytometry analysis of cellular surface markers revealed that the blast cells belonged to the T-cell line, a diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia had been made. Though treated with vincristine, the cat died on the 368th day.
