Abstract

Combustion or incineration is considered as a useful method to manage high-volume annual plastic waste generation. Although burning plastic releases less greenhouse gases than burying it and reduces the waste’s mass and volume greatly, still environmentally benign regulations are required to control emissions. Incineration method has been extensively researched and faces competition to other methods of plastic waste management like recycling, pyrolysis, and gasification. This chapter reviews the existing industrial technologies for incineration of plastic waste and explains their pros and cons in terms of operational, economic, and environmental issues. Moreover, the potentials for improving these technologies are also discussed.
