Abstract

This chapter concentrates on several optical and mechanical testing procedures. It discusses the influence of testing conditions on the testing results. It includes optical parameters like numerical aperture, wavelength, polarization, overfill of the objective lens, and aberration. Other factors, such as read-channel bandwidth and laser noise, are also considered. The chapter describes mechanical tests that relate to actuators and disc imperfections. It discusses optical tests—both static and dynamic—that relate to readout signal quality. It includes testing preformatted information such as sector marks and grooves. It describes recording function tests that include narrow-band carrier-to-noise ratio, cross-talk ratio, wide-band carrier-to-noise ratio, eye patterns, jitter, byte error rate, and defect mapping. It also discusses testing issues with next generation media.
