Abstract
Collagen fibers form the structural scaffolds of vertebrate tissues that store elastic energy, facilitate joint movement, and dissipate excess energy on completion of joint movement. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the molecular, microfibrillar, and fibrillar structures of collagen fibers and the mechanism by which energy is stored, transmitted, and dissipated. The ability of collagen fibers to prevent premature mechanical failure of vertebrate tissues is also examined as well as the failure mechanisms of collagen fibers.
