Abstract
The optical properties of metallic films, their relation to the low frequency electronic properties and how the conductivity and permittivity of the metal changes as the frequency increases are described by use of the Drude and Sommerfeld models. Deviations from these approximations are addressed and the basic theory of surface-plasmon polariton interactions described. The applications of the optical properties of metallic films and plasmonics including recent progress in metamaterials are discussed.
