Abstract

This chapter discusses strategies that make use of nanomaterials for cartilage regeneration. In order to understand the necessary requirements for optimal tissue regeneration and design efficacious nanomaterials, cartilage structure and biology are first reviewed and an overview of current clinical strategies for cartilage repair is described. The chapter then discusses three emerging nanomaterials research areas including hydrogels, nanofibers, and nanocomposites. Particular emphasis is given to strategies that aim to regenerate articular cartilage.
