Abstract
In this chapter, various features of halide glasses and glass-ceramics particularly of the fluoride family are briefly described. Initially, the publication trend and quantitative growth of published papers on fluoride glasses and glass-ceramics during the last 25 years (1990–2014) were presented. This was followed by the depiction of history of development, structure, synthesis, and properties of the halide glasses. Then, the properties of transition-metal and rare-earth ion-doped halide glasses and glass-ceramics were described with specific instances. Finally, the functional applications of halide glasses and glass-ceramics were elaborated with definite examples.
