Abstract

This chapter deals with the engineering check-out to commissioning. Engineering check-out is a physical check of the installation and wiring up of the control system. Some sites already have a standard applicable to this task which should be followed. When powering up the control system ensure that no personnel are liable to have hands, fingers, and so on in any device connected to the control system which may have high voltage applied, or may move. The chapter illustrates that, as a guide most processes run adequately with proportional plus integral control actions. Most manufacturers of electronic controllers provide default settings of proportional and integral actions, which give a reasonable level of automatic control on a high number of applications. The tuning of controllers is a specialized job, and should be entrusted to an instrument technician, or personnel trained to tune control systems. Finally, badly tuned controllers can cause dangerous situations to develop.
