Abstract

Since the 1990s, dry gas seals have replaced compressor oil seals as the seal of choice based on their reliability, safety, and system design. I installed my first dry gas seal in 1982 in a high-speed compressor after a detailed design review and an observed installation. When this seal was removed and inspected after 15years of service, it could have been reused! This chapter will present the dry gas seal key design, installation, monitoring, and troubleshooting issues I have experienced when I participated in many grass root projects and numerous dry gas seal RCFAs. Readers are encouraged to obtain the latest copy of API 692 Dry Gas Sealing Systems for Axial, Centrifugal, Rotary Screw Compressors and Expanders which contains guidelines for Dry Gas Seal Design, Selection, and Installation.
