Abstract

In their Fifth Generation Computer Project, the Japanese have taken the Artificial Intelligence view of the future generation of computers, while attempting to incorporate concepts from the research into processor designs to exploit VLSI, and novel parallel computers that efficiently support very high-level languages. This paper discusses the Fifth Generation Project in detail. Novel decentralised computers which might form the basis for a system architecture for Fifth Generation computers may be broadly classified as control flow, data flow, reduction, actor and logic computers. Finally, the possible future unification of four separate areas of current research is discussed.
