Abstract

Ideal assessment of ventricular segmental function consists of amplitude, velocity and timing. While amplitude can easily be measured by M-mode echocardiography, velocities can be easily quantified by tissue Doppler imaging (TDI). It is of great importance to study tissue Doppler in the context of overall segmental function, rather than in isolation, particularly in patients with heart failure in whom the pattern might be significantly confusing. Normal values of tissue Doppler myocardial velocities have been identified not only in adults but in children and in foetuses.
