Abstract

A novel approach for the preparation of high-performance soy protein concentrate (SPC) blends was introduced. Instead of simply using SPC as an organic filler in blending, processing SPC as plastic during blend compounding was explored. By regulating water content in formulated SPC, phase morphology and properties of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT)/SPC blends were greatly manipulated. Other influencing factors, such as glycerol, compatibilizer, and composition of the blends, were also discussed. The advantage of this processing method is simultaneous plasticization and mixing of SPC with other biodegradable thermoplastics. Plasticization involved the gelation of SPC in the presence of water and subsequent plasticization of the gelated SPC by water and/or other plasticizer. By processing SPC as plastic, percolated SPC structure and resulting superior overall properties of blends were realized.
