Abstract

A steam control valve is very important to control the flow rate through the steam turbine in thermal plants. It is well known that self-excited flow oscillation occurs around the valve with certain valve opening and pressure ratios. In the present report, 2D unsteady CFD is used to study the flow structures under various valve opening and pressure ratios. Four flow patterns are found. Three of them do not cause unsteady side load. One causes unsteady side load due to the self-excited flow oscillation. This oscillation is associated with two patterns of shocks and separations.
