Abstract
The year 1993 was momentous for many reasons. Take That won the Brit Awards for the Best British Single with ‘Could It Be Magic’, Tom Hanks was awarded an Oscar for his leading role in ‘Philadelphia’ and Rita Dove was Poet Laureate, one of her poems being ‘Mother Love’. On a more academic note, Richard Roberts and Phillip Sharp were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for their discovery of ‘split genes’, the discovery of which has been of fundamental importance for today's basic research in biology, as well as for more medically oriented research.
