Abstract

Hainan Airlines (HNAs) transformed from a regional airline into major conglomerate, one of the Fortune Global 500 companies in under 30years. The multinational firm operates in China and abroad in sectors covering aviation and airlines business, real estate property development and management, tourism (hotel and travels), retail merchandising, transport and logistics, and insurance and investment banking solutions. This chapter overviews HNA’s rapid growth (its strategy of expansion and diversification, and its wave of foreign acquisitions) and examines the dramatic turn in the company’s trajectory post-2017, as the company faced a number of serious challenges.
