Abstract

This chapter discusses hole quality issues, benefits, and tool criteria for the single-shot drilling process specifically in aircraft application. The chapter begins by introducing stacked materials and single-shot drilling followed by a summary of the current practice in drilling of stacked materials. Next, characterization of the hole quality commonly induced by single-shot drilling process in relation to tool material and drilling parameter is presented. The chapter then continues with the benefits and the limitations of single-shot drilling process. Finally, the chapter focuses on suggested tool requirements such as the suitable tool design and material for high wear resistance, which lead to longer tool life and improved hole quality.
