Abstract

Nanotechnology for food encapsulation materials may prevent loss of nutrients, extend food lifetime, improve food safety, and alert consumers of food contamination. Some nanocomposite materials in food packages can even repair tears in packaging as well as offer self-heating and self-cooling properties. In this chapter we provide an overview of recent developments in nanocomposite packaging for food and highlight current challenges in this field. This chapter briefly introduces the functions of nanocomposite, polymer substrates, functional nanofillers, antibacterial nanomaterials, nanocomposites preparation, sensors that detect contaminants in foods or monitor changes in packaging conditions or integrity, and limitations of current nanocomposites. Besides, some related enterprises and their research works are mentioned. The wide potential of nanotechnology in overall food industry and its benefits in providing rich nutritional value, quality packaging, and smart sensing are to be borne in mind and relevant research for more safer techniques for incorporation of nanotechnology in food industry has to be implemented.
