Abstract

Electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique is a versatile, environmentally friendly, low-cost, and quick method which provides ultrathin, nanostructured functional coatings on many kinds of substrates with any shapes and dimensions. This chapter gives a review of the LbL method, and an overview of the literature related to studying the functional properties of LbL-coating such as anti-abrasive properties, scratch- and flame-resistance, antimicrobial effects, and improved barrier properties.
