Abstract

In this chapter, free and forced vibration of the multiple-degrees-of-freedom (MDOF) system are discussed. The generalized equations are obtained by applying either Newton's second law or solving Lagrange equations. The orthogonality principle between modes is illustrated. It is also shown how modes are normalized. The stiffness method is used to derive the stiffness matrix of a structure. Relevant programs in MATHEMATICA and MATLAB are also given.
