Abstract

A review of the research literature on medieval dialogue revealed three important aspects. They are that dialogic literature is not yet fully developed; in the late Middle Ages, there are many texts that are unedited; and it lacks a reasonable notion of dialogue for the medieval Latin literature. This chapter discusses the diachronic changes the medieval Latin dialogues. The aim of this work was to develop and typology of the medieval Latin dialogues 1200-1400 and a definition of dialogue, which would be appropriate for the medieval Latin literature. The research unveiled a number of blind spots which need to be cleared with further research. The chapter also talks about the question-and-answer dialogues of the early and late Middle Ages. Some dialogues such as the prayers and meditations, still lack a literary-historical classification and typing.
