Abstract

Aerodynamically generated noise (commonly known as wind noise) is the major source of noise at high speed in a modern car. The sources of in-cabin noise are reviewed and categorised into the source types (monopole, dipole, quadrupole) and the different hydrodynamic/ acoustic mechanisms. Methods of noise reduction are outlined which involve the reduction of the noise source, rather than increases in transmission loss from the external hydrodynamic and acoustic fields to in-cabin. The main tool used in sound measurement (the aeroacoustic wind tunnel) is described.
